We were delighted to welcome everyone to the atmospheric chapel of King’s College Taunton to experience the ethereal beauty of rarely heard choral masterpieces by composers such as Ola Gjeilo, Jan Sandström, and Anna Thorvaldsdottir. We handpicked some of the finest repertoire from Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden & Iceland, from Grieg to the present day, and our concert also featured folk-influenced works for string quartet, which provided a unique opportunity to explore further the rich tapestry of Nordic music.

We were delighted that Anita D’Attellis, the choir’s principal accompanist, gave the second concert in our Amicus Recital Series. This series is an opportunity for us to showcase some very good friends of the choir, performing a programme of well-known and popular works, interspersed with something less familiar.

Anita has performed extensively as a solo and concerto pianist and chamber musician, with recitals at the Brighton and Cheltenham International Festivals, Snape Maltings, the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and the Symphony Hall, Birmingham. This ‘rhapsodic’ recital was a wonderful opportunity to witness Anita’s virtuosic playing at close hand, a real treat!

We were delighted that Richard Pearce, one of the choir’s regular accompanists, agreed to launch our Amicus Recital Series. This series is an opportunity for us to showcase some very good friends of the choir, performing a programme of well-known and popular works, interspersed with something less familiar.

Fresh from his regular appearance at the Last Night of the Proms, Richard took time out to impress with a brace of the world’s most popular toccatas and a selection of beautiful organ music to suit all tastes. Richard started out as an organ scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge, and is now a Professor at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama; he plays and broadcasts regularly with the BBC Singers.

A celebration of the choir’s foundation in 1984.

Unquestionably one of the most beautiful and most poetic of English cathedrals, Wells Cathedral provided the magnificent setting for Somerset Chamber Choir’s joyous Anniversary Concert, celebrating 40 years of glorious music-making. With a distinguished line-up of musicians, this was a concert sparkling with resplendent jewels of the Renaissance and Baroque.

The Choir, under the dynamic direction of Andrea Brown, was joined by Florilegium, one of Britain’s most outstanding period-instrument ensembles, and a stunning array of vocal soloists.

Tallis’s extraordinary 40-part masterpiece Spem in Alium, in a dramatic arrangement featuring cornetts & sackbuts, formed the centrepiece of this very special concert which also included exuberant music by H Praetorius, JS Bach’s dazzling Magnificat in D, the soaring lines of Handel’s sublime Eternal Source of Light Divine, and one of Purcell’s most popular works, Come Ye Sons of Art.

For our annual trip to Wells Cathedral this year, we performed music that stretched from the Paris of La Belle Epoque to the Holy Minimalism of 21st Century Estonia. Along with the distinguished Southern Sinfonia, we also enjoyed the rich baritone of former Monteverdi Choir Apprentice Angus McPhee and the “utterly melting” tones of Katie Trethewey.

St John's Church, High Street, Glastonbury BA6 9DR

An uplifting concert in celebration of Advent! Virtuoso organist Shean Bowers, and Jean Kelly, one of the UK’s most gifted professional harpists, performed solos and accompanied the choir in this concert of beautiful seasonal music from across the centuries. From Renaissance polyphony by Victoria, to modern-day classics by Carl Rütti and Bob Chilcott, and a beguiling arrangement of The Angel Gabriel by Stephen Paulus, these were just a few of the musical gifts on offer, so hopefully something for everyone to enjoy. As well as a small selection of compelling narrations pertaining to the time of year read by children's author and poet Dr Mick Gowar, there was also the opportunity for everyone to join with the choir in singing two well-known Advent hymns.

Our concert coincided with the launch in the church of Glastonbury's Christmas Tree Festival. This annual event, which has been running since 2009, saw local schools, churches, businesses, charities and individuals donating for a tree, then decorating it to their own theme - dozens of trees were decorated and lit, providing a spectacular display!

In our Summer 2022 concert in Wells (postponed from 2020 due to COVID), we performed Mozart’s Mass in C minor, a piece that many critics regard as Mozart's masterpiece in the field of religious composition, and which has a breadth of scale and a grandeur that recalls the great baroque choral masterpieces of Bach and Handel. We were also excited to be performing one of Mendelssohn’s five great Psalms for choir and orchestra, music that is less often performed than the Mozart Mass, but which nevertheless echoes its majestic splendour.

Also included was Haydn's orchestral depiction, so ahead of its time, of the imagined chaos before the creation, a moment in time that we hope was echoed in this concert by two movements from the 'transparent and spacey' Sunrise Mass by the popular Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo. We were joined by Southern Sinfonia, one of the most distinctive chamber ensembles currently operating in the UK, and an exceptional line-up of young soloists.

Along with Elgar’s delightful Spanish Serenade, this concert offered a rare opportunity to hear Hamish MacCunn’s dramatic portrayal of Longfellow’s Wreck of the Hesperus, and Stanford’s unjustly neglected but beautiful setting of Tennyson’s The Princess. There was also an unusual chance to hear Vaughan Williams’ iconic masterpiece The Lark Ascending, inspired by George Meredith’s poem of the same name, in the original setting for violin and piano. Three instant classics from the 21st Century, including settings of Longfellow and e e cummings, completed an afternoon of fascinating music inspired by classic poetry.

With this concert we returned, post-pandemic lockdown, to live music-making with great joy, albeit tempered by caution and uncertainty! We chose music of joy, light, and thankfulness, reflecting our own feelings at being 'released' from a long period of darkness.

Vivaldi's extraordinary Gloria was paired with several anthems from John Rutter’s Psalmfest. Though the musical language of the two composers is very different, they share an immediacy, a directness and an infectious excitement that seemed ideal for our return to the concert platform. We were joined by our very good friend Richard Pearce on the organ, and the concert also featured several of the choir members as soloists.

This was a very happy occasion, and it was lovely to meet up with our audience again after such an unwelcome enforced separation.

An informal half-hour performance of beautiful Sacred Music from around Europe, given as part of the Wells Community Day celebrations.

A celebration of choral and solo song by Brahms, Elgar and Richard Strauss.

Our 2020 concert in King’s College featured a selection of works spanning just 27 years in composition but covering a wealth of human experience. Poetry by Alfred Tennyson, Alice Elgar, Joseph von Eichendorff, Friedrich Rückert and others, set to music expressing love and loss, sorrow and ecstasy by three of the greatest Romantic composers, each of whom was also represented by sublime songs for mezzo-soprano and piano. The concert also featured several rarely-performed gems, such as a selection from Brahms' Gipsy Songs and Strauss' Seven Songs (written while still a teenager), alongside well-loved classics like Elgar's ever-popular From the Bavarian Highlands.

"Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day was commissioned by Somerset Chamber Choir to celebrate the life of Rosemary Semple and is a setting of the much loved Shakespeare Sonnet 18. The sentiment of the poem and the season and occasion suggested a direct and, I hope, emotionally appealing setting, with the timeless text always to the fore. Various choral textures are explored, from the imitative lines of ‘Sometime too hot’, to the warm richness of the closing pages where the choir divides into eight parts. Throughout there is opportunity for word-painting, yet the essential positive nature of the poem is never obscured."

Welcome, everyone, to the Colston Hall for this performance of Waters of Time with music by Ronald Corp and words by Marilyn Floyde performed for you by the Somerset County Youth Choir, the Somerset Chamber Choir, the County Council's choir Canticle and singers from local Somerset primary and secondary schools, accompanied by members of the Somerset County Youth Concert Band and Orchestra, the Advanced Strings group, students from Somerset schools and staff from Somerset Music conducted by Ronald Corp.

It is difficult to express how much pleasure it gives me to write those words; they represent the end of a long, sometimes difficult, sometimes challenging, often exciting and certainly successful journey for many of the people involved in this event. The seed of the idea had been around for a while - that we would work together to create and perform a musical and lyrical celebration of Wells and the Somerset Wetlands, such a beautiful and ancient part of England.

The World Premiere of Waters of Time was performed at Wells Cathedral in February to such critical acclaim that we felt inspired to put on another performance, and so decided to bring it to the attention of a wider audience by performing at the Colston Hall.

I am delighted to tell you that, since September 2005, over 400 young people from around 25 schools have been involved in some aspect of the project and although they are not all on the platform tonight I am sure that they are here in spirit. I do know that they have all enjoyed and benefitted from their involvement in some, or all, of the vocal workshops and rehearsals along the way. And when I consider the young musicians in the Somerset County Youth Choir and the project orchestra, I realise that there are pupils from at least an additional 25 Somerset Schools, so more than 50 Somerset Schools are represented here tonight.

Somerset Music is committed to access, breadth and quality, but a mission statement is nothing until it comes true; tonight it will come true! Thanks to the words of Marilyn and the music of Ron we will weave mystical tapestries, cast spells, recount the myths and legends, and tell the tales of this part of Somerset - Wells and the Wetlands. The witch deep underground, King Arthur and Monmouth, the Wyvern and the Bishop and a whole host of local characters populate the piece; we will tell you of fairs and battles and much more besides. Thanks to the work of Penny Dunscombe and her team, the performers that you will hear tonight have encountered new music, will achieve high standards of musical performance, will leave here tonight with an important memory indelibly etched in their minds and go on to 'live well and in peace forever'. These opportunities change young people for the better, and for ever! These experiences can help young people to be healthy and safe, to make a positive contribution and to enjoy and achieve. This is our core purpose, this is what we stand for. My thanks to all those involved who have contributed to this remarkable achievement and I hope that you are entertained, delighted and moved by what you hear tonight.
