How to join
Membership vacancies are usually reviewed annually and auditions held each October. Applications (aged 18 or over) to join the choir are welcomed, but the outcome will depend on whether or not there are vacancies in any section. We are currently experiencing problems with our online application form (below) so, if you are interested in applying, please email Philip at prbevan15@gmail.com, thank you. If we have any vacancies, we will invite you to audition. Applicants will meet with the conductor for a short and friendly audition which will be made as stress-free as possible! One of the choir's trustees may also be present. The audition will comprise a brief warm-up with vocal exercises to establish your range and vocal register, a short unaccompanied song of your own choice prepared in advance, and a small piece of sight-reading.
If you are invited to join the Choir, you will need to be aware of our rehearsal attendance policy which can be found here. The annual subscription is £180 for 2026/27, with a 50% reduction for students; monthly or quarterly payment options are offered if needed, and a reduced rate (negotiable in confidence) is available to anyone who otherwise might not be able to join. Our financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March, and singers who join mid-year would normally be asked to pay a proportional subscription for the year in which they join.
What to expect
Although not compulsory, if you are unable to read music you may struggle - most members of the choir can do so and have some previous experience of choral singing, although recordings of works are made available to assist you in learning your part in between rehearsals. Vocal scores are normally provided free of charge, although very occasionally members may be asked to buy scores if the choir has been unable hire them. We aim to include vocal training in some rehearsals to help us with sound, tuning, blend and voice production.
We sing quite a wide range of music, but we would encourage you to look at our Concert Archive page for more details. Our concerts are usually well supported, typically attracting audiences of between 150 and 500.
Where
Rehearsals are held at Hambridge Village Hall (click for map) which is located between Langport and Barrington, in a beautiful spot overlooking the Somerset Levels. We rehearse on six weekends a year – five of these are on a Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm (although concert-day timings are likely to vary from this), but the final rehearsals for the Wells Cathedral concert are always on a Friday and Saturday (as the concert is on Saturday evening). Not in Somerset?
As rehearsals only take place at weekends, it is not necessary to live in Somerset or its neighbouring counties, and many members travel from distant parts of the UK to sing with us, taking the opportunity to visit friends and relatives, or to enjoy some holiday in this beautiful part of the country.
Friends
Meeting other members in any organisation can often be a challenge, but we are all very friendly. During most rehearsal weekends we arrange at least one pub lunch which helps new members to break the ice. Those who don’t wish to go to the pub usually enjoy lunch together in the village hall, again a relaxed opportunity to start to make new friends.
